Sean Ellis is a British filmmaker and fashion photographer whose distinctive visual sensibility bridges the worlds of commercial photography and auteur cinema. Based in London, Ellis first gained recognition in the fashion industry before turning to narrative filmmaking with remarkable results.
Cashback (2004), his debut short, explored the lonely nightshift world of a heartbroken art student working at a supermarket who discovers he can freeze time. The film screened at the Manhattan Short Film Festival in 2005 and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Live Action Short Film. Ellis subsequently expanded it into a feature-length version released in 2006, produced by Lene Bausager.
Ellis’s visual style β painterly compositions, precise color grading, and a fascination with the intersection of beauty and melancholy β carries across all his work. He went on to direct the thriller Anthropoid (2016), based on the true story of the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, and the horror film The Cursed (2021). His background in still photography gives his moving images an uncommon compositional rigor.
